Awards, Writes of Spring 2004

 

Joe Karre, center, won first place in both poetry and fiction at the third-grade level in the  Writes of Spring competition, a writing contest sponsored by the Acadiana Writing Project. 

About 750 students from across Acadiana entered writing in the contest, which awarded prizes for poetry, nonfiction and fiction at kindergarten through high school levels.

Joe won $40 for his writing; the Junior League of Lafayette contributed $1,800 in prize money for the entire competition.  Joe is flanked by his parents, Al and Lisa Karre;  by his grandmother, Inez Karre, left; and by Margaret Simon, a teacher at Ascension Day School, who directs the Writes of Spring competition. 

The Acadiana Writing Project is a University of Louisiana at Lafayette program to improve writing at the K-12 level. It is funded by a $43,000 grant from the National Writing project.
